Labour Interests in Manawatu

MEETING AT RONGOTEA Despite the bitter wintry conditions on Saturday evening, there was an attendance of over one hundred at the monthly meeting of the Manawatu Labour Representation meeting, which was held at Rongotea. Mr A. Carroll, vice-president, was in the chair, while Air W. A. Hurst, secretary of the Rongotea branch, welcomed delegates and members on behalf of the branch, expressing the pleasure it gave members to see such a representative gathering.

Air Carroll extended a welcome to Air and Mrs C. L. Hunter, Hon. AI. L. Briggs, Air Alurphy, president of the Palmerston North L.R.C., and to Air Somerset, of Feilding. The secretary, Air E. Bowater, stated that there were delegates ' present from three new branches, Whakarongo and Oroua Downs, and asked members to warmly welcome them.

Air Murphy thanked all present for the welcome accorded him and mentioned it was the first time he had attended an L.R.C. meeting outside of the Palmerston North area. He thought it was truly inspiring to see such enthusiasm as evidenced by the Rongotea. meeting. When the roll-call of delegates was taken, the following branches notified their representation: Feilding, Halcombe, Awahuri, Glen Oroua-Taikorea, Bunuythorpe, Longburn, Ashhurst, Sanson, Whakarongo, Oroua Downs, Bai.ncsse, Tangimoana.

As the L.R.C. president, Air W. H. Oliver, has been appointed organiser for the Pahiatua district, it was necessary to appoint a new president, Air A. Carroll being elected. Air P. Guy, of Feilding, was the new vice-president apiiointed.

Air Hunter addressed the meeting on one or two matters of importance and at the conclusion stated that it was necessary for tho L.R.C. to appoint an organiser throughout the district. Individual members had been giving a tremendous amount of time to the work but it was essential that a capable organiser take over the work. Air E. Bowater was unanimously elected to lilt this position. He briefly thanked members for tho confidence they liad reposed in him and dealt with the work which was being put in hand. The Queen Carnival is now in full swing and the secretaries of the three district committees gave brief reporta on activities up to date and the proposed functions for the next fortnight. Much enthusiasm lias beeu aroused by tho carnival and, judging by the list of functions to be held, should prove highly successful from both a social and financial point of view. Aliss Ruby Adin, the 'Western Queen, was introduced to the gathering. The Eastern and Central Queens were unable to be present as they were attending dances in theit own areas.

Air Somerset gave a brief but interesting talk on literature, and said that if it was desired to form a study group on any topic of interest, he would do his best to arrange a suitable -Weekly hour. An interesting meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to tho Rongotea-Glen Oroua ladies for supper provided. In connection with the euchre and dance to be held at Glen Oroua to-night (Tuesday), it is necessary to make a slight correction. This was inadverently advertised as admission being 2/6 and 1/6, whereas the notice should have read 2/- and 1/6.
