School Committee Meetings

MANCHESTER STREET The Manchester Street School committee met last night, Mr. J. G. Fitzpatrick (chairman) presiding. Others present were Alessrs. T. Burne, A. Matthews, L. J. Carmine, J. Campbell, and Meedamea S. AlcDowell and P. G.! Guy. In connection with the proposal for . e-modelling the school, levelling ,the doors, and the provision of a separate infant room, the Wanganui Education Board wrote regretting that some of these works had not met with their approval, but that provision would be made for the levelling of the doors. Tlie headmaster, Mi . F. J. Gaze, said the school was entitled to an additional teacher, with the roll at 400 in October last, although the number had dropped since. The chairman said the request for the levelling of the floors should be pressed, and tflat the application bo renewed with a request to have tho work dono during the coming term holidays. Regarding the introduction of tubular heating in the classrooms the headmaster reported that the system had proved satisfactory with the exception of Standard 6 room, where conditions were far from satisfactory. The probable cause cpuld be traced to faulty ventilation or to the fact that this room was built over an old creek-bed and this was probably full of water, causing the lower temperature in the room. It was thought that during tho levelling of the floor, this matter could be attended to. It was decided to leave the matter over until this work was in hand.

With reference to Arbor Day, it was decided to ask Mr. N. Malcolm, of the High School staff, to address the children, and it was agreed to plant suitable shrubs. The offer of Mr. Carmine to provide several shrubs was accepted with thanks.

In his report, the headmaster stated that the roll stood at 377, with an averago attendance for June of 91 per cent., and for July of 90 per cent. During the past two months 15 pupils liad left tho school, while colds and measles had resulted in a number oi absentees. Three members of the teaching staff, Misses Frazer, McLeod and Feickers, had been absent through illness.

Alembers of the English women's h-ockey team and the Indian team had visited the sehool, and their visit had been much appreciated. The Feilding Basketball Association had arranged a tournament to bo held last week, ana while 20 teams had arrived to participate, the weather had prevented play. The visitors had been ontertaiued at a community sing, at afternoon tea and at a movie picture show.

The Standard 4 pupils, from an impromptu concert, had raised 10s, which had been forwarded to the Blind Institute, while the pupils had voluntarily given assurance of assisting the funds of tho Chinese Relief Committee and had committed themselves to raise £4; £3, including a -well-wisher’s donation, had already been received.

Grounds improvements had been effectod, and a general clearing up of the reserve. Lytton Street. Air. C. V. Jewell (chairman) presided at the meeting of the Lytton Street School Committee, held last evening. Also present were Alessrs. J. C. Christian, L. Jenkins, E. Wilkinson, C. V. Guy, F. P. Fawcett, A. Laing and W. H. Smith (headmaster), and Alesdames E. Scott and T. Donaldson. Advice was received from the Wanganui Education Board that the capitation grant -would be on the same basis as last year. The headmaster reported the roll at 374. The attendance had been affected by the'bad weather, while measles had made an appearance, there being .16 known cases. Ground improvements were keenly carried out under the supervision of the Public Works Department. The English and Indian hockey teams had visited the school. Regarding tho supply of cocoa to the children, the response had not been very satisfactory, and on the charge of 3d per week per child the service showed a loss. The chairman said it appeared that the Public Works Department was taking the matter of grounds improvement out of the committee's hands, and the committee would unlikely be called upon for a contribution to the cost. Regarding milk in schools, the chairman recalled -what had recently happened in Palmerston North and suggested it was time action was taken to have the service extended to the Feilding schools. It was decided to call a meeting of the local Alilk in Schools Committee to discuss the matter. It was also decided to call a meeting to consider dental clinic matters.
