Cheltenham

From Our Own Correspondent. School Committee. The Cheltenham school committee met on Thursday evening, when arrangements were finalised for the school fancy dress ball on August 5. Arrangements were made for concreting and other improvements to the school grounds, and for the school to participate in the Agricultural Club competitions. Valedictory. A farewell social and dance was tendered to Mr W. J. Port and family by the residents of Cheltenham and district on Thursday' evening. The early' part of the evening was spent in dancing and community singing. After supper had been served by the ladies, Mr C. Anderson (chairman), spokw in eulogistic terms of Mr Port, saying that during his nineteen years in the district, Mr Port had always been ready and willing to assist with local efforts. H© had been a real asset to Cheltenham. He wished to express sincere regret at the Joss the district had sustained and wished Mr Port and his family' every happiness. Mr Booth spoke of the great assistance Mr Port had been to the district for nearly twenty years. The people of Cheltenham did not know of one half of the help he had given, to local efforts. Both churches, the hall, the Ping Pong Club and the Rifle Club had all benefitted by his generosity. He wished Mr Port and his family all prosperity and happiness. Mr A. B. Shannon said that it gave him great pleasure to be associated with the previous speakers. It was hard to think of Mr Port and not of the Cheltenham store. When Mr For t came to the district the store was not the flourishing concern it is now. By energy and enterprise a fine business had been built up. On behalf of those present he joined with the previous speakers in wishing Mr Port and his family' health and prosperity. Mr Shannon then asked Mr Port to accept a suitcase and a travelling rug with the best wishes of his many Cheltenham friends. Mr Port expressed pleasure at seeing so many of his old friends present, and thanked them for the gifts and good wishes. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing. During the evening, an opportunity was taken to welcome Mr and Mrs H. Branch back to the district. Woman's institute. An open committee meeting of the Cheltenham W.I. was held on Tuesday, when the chief business was the discussion of remits for the annual conference.
