The date of the spring show was 1 fixed for Tuesday, September 13. and the schedule was prepared. The Rongotea Bulb Show usually creates interest throughout the district and this year promises to be & particularly good one. The guest of the evening, Mr A. J. Shailer, gave a talk on the cultivation of dahlias, members making notes of valuable hints with regard to important points of culture. Mrs A. J. Will, at the conclusion of Mr Shailer’s talk, thanked him for attending, but mentioned that the request for a talk on dahlia culture had really been camouflage. The committee's veal object In having Mr Shailer present was to express their very deep and sincere appreciation of the services he had rendered to the Society over a long period. For many years Mr Shailer had attended each show and acted as judge, and not only judge, but a very' kindly advisor to exhibitors in need of information. The president said that she felt sure there were no words which would adequately express the appi'eciation of the Society', and on behalf of the committee asked their guest to accept a travelling rug as a small token of esteem. Mr J. C. Glover and Mr D. H. Yarrall spoke in glowing terms of their long association with Mr Shailer and of his never failing geniality and helpfulness. They’ mentioned that over a period of thirty years he had attended the district shows and judged on each occasion, but would never hear of accepting remuneration. Messrs 11. N. and D.B. Rowe also spoke eulogistically of the asi sistance Mr Shailer had given to the show committee at all times. The guest of honour was then accorded musical honours. Mr Shailer, Who had been taken completely by surprise, expressed his thanks to the committee for the gift, it was over thirty years since he first started judging at the Rongotea Shows, and during that period he had missed only one show. It always gave him pleasure to attend and ho had certainly not expected anything in return. He could only again say "thank you” to the committee. Mrs Will then entertained those present to supper, at the conclusion of which Mr H. N. Rowe expressed the appreciation of the committee to Mrs Will for her generous hospitality. Presentation to Miss Jill Bower. A happy little function took place last Tuesday evening when the management and staff of Messrs Parkes. and Companygathered to make a presentation to Miss Jill Bower, whose marriage shortly takes place. On behalf of the staff, Mr Fox handed Miss Bower an afternoon tea set, Mr Bleaklev and Mr McDonell, on behalf of the management, presenting her with a cheque. Mention was made that Miss Bower was severing her connection with the firm after a period of nine years’ service, during which time she had been a valuable assistant, her unfailing courtesy having made her exceedingly' popular. All present wished her every happiness in her new sphere. Girl Guides. The committee of the Girl Guides’ Association met at the home of Mrs H. V. Caverhill on Friday afternoon, there beeing a full attendance of members. Mrs Caverhill, president, was in the chair. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £2 2s lOd. This amount would shortly be paid out for various dues, and it was suggested that some effort should be made to provide the committee "with a working fund. Mrs A. J. Will, vicepresident, offered her home for a garden party, the date of which was fixed tentatively' for November 5. The president expressed the committee’s thanks to Mrs Will for her offer. The Guide CapttCTn, Miss Davis, spoke or the concert and dance which the Guides were holding. The president spoke with regret of the fact that they had to accept the resignation of Miss Knight as secretary. She had filled this position for six years and it was only the fact that Miss Knight was shortly to be married that allowed them to accept her resignation at all. She had carried out her duties at all times with great credit, and the committee felt that they could not allow' her to leave the district without expressing their appreciation. Mrs Caverhill then asked Miss Knight to accept some china with love and good wishes from the committee. The . Guide Captain also expressed her appreciation of Miss Knight’s services. Musical honours were accorded Miss Knight. 'Miss Alisa Buchanan was unanimously elected secretary to fill the vacancy created by Miss Knight’s resignation. Mrs Caverhill then entertained those present to afternoon tea, the committee expressing thir appreciation of her hospitality. Young Farmers’ Club.
