From Our Own Correspondent. Miniature Rifle Shooting. In * match for the C. and R. Cup between Moutoa A and Otaki A teams, at Moutoa last week, the local team was defeated by 1031 pointa to 1046.. Adams, selector of the schoolboy team to represent schools of the southern section of the district, has chosen the following boys to play at Devin, against representatives of the northern schools on July 30: Forwards. P. Webster. J. Gurney, J. Kendrick, C. Atmore (Otaki); P. Phillips (O. Con.): I. Harris (Muhunoa); S. Heperi (Ohau), and N. Bryant (Manakau); emergency forwards, C. Jensen (Manakau) and T. These boys will assemble at Manakau on Friday at 2.15 p.m. for practice, and then at 9.30 a.m. on July 30 at Devin, will met the northern team, the reason being to enable the selectors to choose a team to represent Horowhenua v. Wellington and Manawatu at Devin at Devin, and also to take part in the quadrangular contest at the Hutt dur/ng the first week of the term holidays. Obituary. The late Mr Richard Hagan, who recently passed away at the Palmerston North Hospital, was one of the bestknown personages in this district, having been an employee of the Horowhenua County Council for 34 years. Deceased was boro in Charters Tower, Victoria, 85 years, and as a boy, came to New Zealand, receiving his early education in the Wellington district. For some time he resided at Trentham, and then attended school at Upper Hutt. and later worked at Prouse's mill at Silverstream. Some fifty years ago the late Mr Hagan came to Otaki, and lived both there and also at Te Horo. Some ten months ago he became ill and entered the Palmerston North Hospital. There are six daughters and four eons to mourn their loss. The daughters are Mrs Robinson (Shannon), Mrs Chote (Wellington), Mrs Kiddie (Hastings), Mrs W. H. Chote (Auckland), Mrs C. Thompson (Palmerston North), and Mrs Pat Wells (Otaki), while tfie sons are Mr D. T. Hagan (Palmerston North), Mr J. E. Hagan (Greymouth) and Mr W. G. Hagan (Taihape). Three members of the family died some time ago, one being k.iled in the Great War. A brother. Mr J. Hagan, resides in Dannevirke, the sisters having all passed aWay. Miniature Rifle Club, A fortnight ago a meeting was convne*»d to form a miniature rifle club in Shannon, ana it '*us decided to invite the Mcutoa M.K.C. to meet delegates from the Shannon club to discuss the question of the amalgamation or the two clubs, in view of the fact that Moutoa was finding it difficult to carry on owing to lack of support. Representatives of the two clubs met on Thursday night, there being present Messrs A. Birss, B. Wilkinson, R. Scanlon, and D. Christopherson from Shannon, and S. Barber (chair), A. Smith (secretary), A. Cooper, J, Beattie, J. Duemsky and G. Barber, from Moutoa. 'The chairman noted the disappointing resonsc on the part of members of the Moutoa Club, in spite of their being notified of the meeting. After discussion, Mr J. Beattie moved that the Moutoa Club be transferred to Shannon for the remainder of the season, on condition that the equipment was handed back to Moutoa at the end of the season.—-Carried. It was decided that Moutoa should be allowed 10 per cent, of the ammunition takings to compensate them for the use of the rifles and depreciation. A cup for first year shooters, recently donated by Messrs W. Richardson and G. Barber, will be shot for at Shannon. This cup will be competed for in five consecutive shoots, the funds derived from this to be handed to the Moutoa Club. Beautifying Fund. As a final effort to complete the raising of the necessary' money (£3O) to obtain the Shannon Borough Council’s subsidy of £lO, towards the planting and protection of trees in the streets of Shannon, a street-stall was held on Friday afternoon last. A sum of £7 11s was raised by thia means, and this, together with other donations, brought the total to the required amount. A number of competitions were run in connection with the stall, the winners being: Mr E. Perry (dinner). Miss P. Burgess (cake), Mr V. McEwen (wine). Children’s Concert. As evidence of the widespread interest in the move to establish swimming baths in Shannon, the initiative of some of the pupils of the Shannon school will be appreciated. Not content to let their elders do all the work in raising the necessary funds, a group of children, under the direction of Naomi Doyle, staged a concert on Saturday afternoon. As a result, the sum of 10s was made available for the swimming bath fund. The organiser and • cast" are to be congratulated upon the excellence of their presentation, which was thoroughly deserving of greater support. Y.F.C. Field Day.

Quite a good muster of members of the local branch of the Young Farmers’ CTlfb were present on Friday at the Devin Showgrounds, at one of the most successful field days yet held in the Horowhenua district. It was organised by the Horowhenua Young Farmers’ Club, and 200 attended lectures and demonstrations at which speakers discussed a wide variety of subjects dealing with many aspects of farm work. A demonstration of Southdown sheep was given by Mr G. W. Munford (Shannon), who elaborated type points, and a judging competition in this section resulted as follows: P. Bartholomew (Devin) 1, A. Jepson (Devin) 2, R. W. Hillas (Otaki) 3. A demonstration of the type characteristics of the Jersey cow was given by Mr T. Ranford, Whakarongo), a judging competition resulting as follows: C. Dewis (Devin) 1, It. W. Hillas (Otaki) 2, F. Shailer (Oroua Downs) 3. Films shown by Mr R. B. Tennent, director of the Fields Division, dealt with the use of a gyrotiller. The second feature, a "talkie,’’ dealt with reproduction among animals, more particularly in the domestic type. A sound film, giving an insight into the organisation and direction of a symphony orchestra, concluded this section. The question of dairy farming costs in relation to the size of farms, was discussed by Mr R. P. Connell, of the Department of Agriculture, while Mr C. J. Hamblyn, of the same Department, spoke on subterranean clover. In the early part of the afternoon a lantern lecture was delivered by Mr E. B. Bevy, director of the grass-lands division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the subject being the grass-lands of ureat Britain, the Continent and Canada. Mr Devy showed a series of photographs taken on a recent trip abroad. The final speaker of the day was Mr K. E. Elphiok, a veterinarian of the Eivestock Division, who supplemented his talk on diseases and other troubles, with illustrations.
