Pahiatua Boxing Club

AMATEUR TOURNAMENT WILL BE WORTH SEEING (By "Straight Left.”) Amateur boxing bouts are notoriously difficult to arrange. This is one of the main reasons why the Pahiatua Boxing Association has delayed in publishing any details with regard to theii all amateur tourney to be held on Friday, July 15. It is disappointing to the public tc advertise lights between contestants who for some reason or anotner let the association down and fail to appear or the night. Now that the president (Mr A. P. Jensen) and the secretary (Mr J. C. Carbines) have been to Palmers ton North for the last two tournament: they have seen most of the best boxer; in the Manawatu personally and ar ranged some good bouts. At the last meeting of the executivi it was unanimously decided to run ai all-amateur tourney. It was pointet out that, while the professional contest held during the past season had beei disappointing, the amateur bouts ha< been universally praised. Amateurs and good amateurs, are as plentiful a ragwort, and with the New Zealam championships in September, are onl; too willing to get into form. Among the bouts so fa arranged—there will be at least ten, including tw star bouts of either four or six round —are lighters well known in the district Cohghlan and McFarlane, two light weights, who fought at the last tourne; here, have been matched. Two heavy Weights will make their debut—Fell (; policeman), of Palmerston North, am Peeti, of Danncvirlce, a dusky son o New Zealand. The clash of these tw should be well worth seeing. Two o the star performers will be Kitt (o Hastings), Hawke’a Bay welterweigh champion, and Jack McCann, Welling ton welter champion, already .known t Pahiatua for a stirring clash with Chris tiansen, of Palmerston North. But th best clash of the night will l>e that be tween Higgins, of Wellington, and Jo Collins, last year’s New Zealand chan pion, and well known to Pahiatua ei thusiasts. Higgins is probably the bej man at his weight in the city and shoul ' give Collins a great fight. Billy Hei berg, of Wellington, his trainer, is sux i of his ability to beat Collins and coming up for the encounter. From pr< * sent indications it is certain that th tourney will be well up to previoi : standards.
