A benign Government department allows them to hire spring mattresses, sheets, counterpanes, easy chairs, carpets and ornaments till the cells look more ilke cheerful suburban living rooms. Food is naturally of the plainest in prison diet, but if the prisoner can pay , for them ho can have any meals sent in to him from a neighbouring restaurant, all kept piping hot by a special heating arrangement. Although spirits are rigidly forbidden unless under medical advice, a pint of ale or a half bottle of wine may be had and consumed on the premises every 24 hours. In fact, the present life of a Brixtoa prisoner on remand is made as comfort 4ble as possible. But the police do not feel inclined to allow the prisoners to have all tho breaks. The new section house in course of preparation at Putney for the use of unmarried Metropolitan Police officers will be the last word in comfort and elegance. Lifts to all floors will be fitted, while the cubicles are to have electric bedlamps fitted, wardrobes and elegant dressing-tables.
