St. Peter’s Day

CHURCH OF ENGLAND FESTIVAL Wednesday was 3t. Peter’s Day, and the Pahiatua Anglican congregation kept the day as a festival, St. Peter being the patron saint of their church. Services of Holy Communion were held in the morning and in the evening a social gathering was held in the Foresters’ Hall, at which a representative number of parishionors attended. The evening was spent in games, competitions and dancing under the control of Mr. A. W. Hamilton. Miss D. F. E. Junker contributed two vocal solos, which wero warmly applauded. Miss Avis Arrow was the accompanist. During intervals in the evening’s fun, two presentations were made. Mr. W. L. Tattle was called on to speak to the worth of Mr. and Mrs. Truscott and to wish them all good wishes on behalf of the parishioners, on the occasion of their recent marriage. The Rev. H. Wilson presented them with a cut-glass wine decanter and a coffee percolator. Mr. Truscott suitably replied. Mr. A. W. Hamilton, the parishioners’ warden, then introduced the matter of a second presentation, this I time to Mr. Geo. Haines, who had recently relinquished the position of superintendent of St. Peter’s Sunday School, lie spoke of Mr. Haines’ long and faithful service over a period of nearly 15 years, and then asked the Rev. H. Wilson to present him with a pair of fireside chairs. Mr. G. G. Taylor also spoke of Mr. Haines’ untiring energy and splendid service to the church, not only as Sunday School teacher, but in many other directions, and said it was pleasing to know that Mr. and Mrs. Haines were not leaving the district. The vicar then mentioned the departure of the Misses Geange from the parish, but as they were present that night he desired to assure them of the deep gratitude of the congregation for their services as Sunday School teachers, choir members, and on the sanctuary guild. The ladies guild had made them a gift and it was by the Misses Geanges’ desire that no further presentation was being made that evening. Ho hoped they would enjoy their days of retirement at Waikanae. A dainty supper was then partaken of, after which dancing filled in the time. Mr. A. W. White acted as M.C. and Miss Lotus White played the dance music for which she received a hearty vote of thanks. Extras were played by Mrs. Truscott and Miss H. Horrax. In concluding the proceedings, *iie vicar thanked all who had worked to make the evening a success, especially the ladies who had charge of the supper. The singing of the National Anthe brought the evening to a close.
