LABOUR’S QUEEN CARNIVAL MISS FRANCES McLEAN POLLS HIGH FOR POPULARITY Woodville’s queen in the Pahiatua electorate’s Labour Party carnival, Miss Frances McLean, daughter of Mr. F. R. McLean, farmer, of Maharahara, leads by the good margin of 258 penny votes, according to the latest figures. Miss McLean has polled the handsome total of 9383 votes. The Dannevirke queen ranks next with 9025, then Pahiatua with 4800 and Northern, which embraces the Ormondviflc and Takapau districts, with 4036. The Woodville committee’s efforts, which so far have consisted of a series of euchre tournaments and raffles, havo met with a most encouraging response. There is a largo number of people at work, headed by Mr. G. Wilkes (chairman), Mr. F. R. M. Paddy (vice-chair-man), Mr. McKenzie (organiser), Mrs. F. W. Manning (secretary), and Mrs. McConnon (treasurer). From now on until the closing date of the carnival effort, which is set for May--31, the campaign will be intensified in eagerness to maintain thepresent majority of Woodville’s queen. No decision has yet been reached with regard to either the exact date or location of the coronation ceremony. Local opinion, however ,at present is in favour of holding it in the district of the winning queen. This should be a further inducement to Woodville workers to redouble their efforts so as to have this important event take place here.
