Papatawa Notes

A happy dance and euchre party was held last week to aid the candidature of the local queen in the carnival being conducted by the Labour Party in Pahiatua. Excellent music was pro vided by Mr. Gleadow. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. Golder and Mr. C. Leach. Mr. Pirie was M.C. Tins euchre tournament winners were Mrs. Dickie and Mr. Sandbrook. The supper arrangements were undertaken by some of the local ladies. A happy time was spent by all present and quite a good sum was cleared to buy- votes for the Woodville queen.

The biennial meeting of householders was held on Monday but only six persons turned up and from these they were unablo to elect a committee. The present chairman (Mr. Picking) and the secretary (Mr. Thorne) wefe not seeking re-election. The Education Board will probably arrange for another meeting of householders to be held at a later date, when it is hoped more parents will be presenc. On Wednesday evening a public sendoff was tendered to Mr. and Mrs. Munro and family who are leaving tlio district shortly to reside in Miramar, where Mr. Munro has received an appointment. There was a very large attendance of residents and children present, and dancing was the order of the evening Music was supplied by Mesdames O’Hagaii and Nelson and Mr. Parker. Items were also contributed by Miss Johnston and Mr. Dumbleton (Tapanui), songs. After supper Mr. Dickins, ou behalf of the residents, asked Mr. and Mrs. Munro to accept a dinner set, with the best wishes of all present for a happy and prosperous future. In making the presentation, Mr. Dickins spoko of the great assistance Mr. Munro had been in helping with any project in connection with the school, such as the modernisation of the school buildings, the school jubilee and the inilk-in-school scheme. Mrs. Munro had also helped in providing morning and afternoon tea for any working bees that "had been held at the school. MY. Dickins assured her that her kindly thoughts had been appreciated very much. Musical honours w r ere accorded Mr. and Mrs. Munro. On behalf of the Papatawa Women’s Institute, Mrs. Martin presented Mrs. Munro with a silver savoury dish with tho best wishes of all the members. Mrs. Martin voiced the feelings of the members when she said that' Mrs. Munro would be very much missed in the Women’s Institute. She had been an active member for seven 2i of which she had been secretary, and her cheery smile Avould be very much missed. In thanking the residents and members of the Women’s Institute for their gifts, Mrs. Munro said she was very sorry to leave Papatawa. She had formed some deep attachments and she was finding it very difficult to be leaviug many friends behind, but she hoped that her friends would not forget h.et when visiting Wellington. She would be pleased to welcome anyone from Papatawa who cared to call. Mr. Munro also thanked all for the beautiful gifts that had been presented to them and said he had always done his best to fit into the community. He especially thanked the committee for the wonderful help he had always had from them. The usual, monthly meeting of tho Papatawa Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday when tliero was a very good attendance. Mrs. E. Martin presided and extended a welcome to all present. It was decided to enter a team in the drama festival to be held in July, and tho secretary was instructed to try and procure some plays. A report of the annual council meeting held at Otane last month was presented by Mrs. Gleadow, one of the delegates from Papatawa W.l. Arrangements were made for two kitchen teas which are to be held in the near future. Tentative arrangements wore also' made for another dance and euchre party in aid of W.l. funds. The date has not been finally decided. The competitions for the month were: Seniors, an article from old felt hats, won by tyfrs. S. Sandbrook; juniors,* an article from old'felt j hats, won by Miss J. Gilbert. These competitions were judged by - Mrs.

Munro and Mrs. Hart. An interesting talk on Denmark was given by Mrs. M. Munro. This talk proved very instructive and was very much enjoyed. Afternoon tea was then dispensed by the hostesses and a happy afternoon w r as brought to a close. Mr. and Mrs. Pallison, of Napier, who have been spending a holiday in Papatawa, returned homo on Wednesday.
