Badminton in Palmerston

REPORT ON LAST SEASON’S PROGRESS The annual report of the Palroer.ton North. Badminton Club reada as follows: — Membership: The season opened with a big increase in members, and though many of our last year players have left the district indications point to an influx of many new members for the coming season. The club’s finances show a healthy position owing to a shorter season through the produce hall being engaged for so many dances, and an increase in membership. We commenced the season with a credit balance of £l4 Is B*l and finished up with £23 37s 2d in hand, a result which must be regarded as highly satisfactory, lu addition, outstanding fees amounting 1o £6 remain to be collected. Sub-Association: Early in the year & Manawatu Bub-Association was formed, *and an inter-club competition was started in w'hich sevcu clubs entered teams in the A and B grades. The A team played very well, but it was not gtrong enough to be placed, but the B team won the Slazeuger Cup, to whom we extend our hearty congratulations. The club is also to. be congratulated upon three of its members being chosen for the association team, viz., Mr. A. Barnett, Miss B. McDonald and Mrs. New.

Inter-provincial: The inter-provincial tournament that was inaugurated by the club has proved successful and was taken over last year by the association, but we wish to thank those ladies from this club whose assistance was so freely given and who to ably carried out their arduous duties helping to look after the welfare of the many present. inter-club: Besides the inter-club competitions a home and homo match was played against the Iruluy Club, Wanganui, and it behoves the incoming committee to try and make this match an annual affair, as both teams enjoyed the games immensely. Club championship: The committee takes this opportunity of congratulating Miss B. McDonald and Mr. A. Barnett upon winning t lie women's and men’s club championships respectively. Australian visitors: A team of four men and four women chosen from Australia's best, badminton players will visit Palmerston North on Saturday, July 2, and will play a series of matches against Manawatu. You are asked to reserve this evening, as these players will be w'ortb seeing. Thanks: Our thanks are due to our delegate to the Western District Association, Mr. Morton, for his interest in the club, to the many ladies who contribute so much and so willingly towards making our various functions so enjoyable, to the players who lent their cars for tho inter-club matches, to Mr. Parker, caretaker of A. and P. Association, for his assistance at all times, and to the Press for their courtesy in reporting the matches and meetings.
