Pahiatua Golf Club

ANNUAL MEETING HELD APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS Mr. J. G. Brechin presided over 50 members of the Pahiatua Golf Club at the annual meeting held in the Borough Chambers on Tuesday evening. The annual report stated: The balance-sheet discloses that during the year expenditure has been exceptionally heavy and that as a result liquid assets have dropped from £l2O la On at March 14, 1937, to £l6 7s 6d at March 14, 1938. The additional expenditure was incurred in erecting a new club house which is valued in the bal-ance-sheet at £3OO, the amount for which it is insured. The total value of the assets last year was £164 14s 9d as against £425 19s in this year's balance-sheet. Liabilities total £7O and offsetting this against the present assets it is found that the club's position has actually improved to the extent of £l9l 4s 3d. Subscriptions: It is incumbent on members to pay their subscriptions at the beginning of the season and it is deplored that such a great number of the club members defer payment until June 30, on which day the penalty accrues. Members would greatly aid the officers concerned with the collection of subscriptions by paying earlier in the season and thus avoiding what may be termed a “traffic jam." Furthermore, many subscriptions are still outstandng, and it would be appreciated if members who have not paid their subscriptions would arrange liquidation thereof. There are 134 members altogether, 69 men and 65 ladies. Last year the total membership was 125—67 men and 5S ladies. Club competitions: Tho ladies' championship was won by Mrs. Par Nelson, with Mrs. G. Nelson as runner-up. Handicap cup, Mrs. G. Nelson, with Miss L. Arrow runner-up. Mrs. Matthews' rose bowl, Mrs. Siddells and Mrs. G. Nelson, with Misses Arrow and Haggard run-ners-up. Junior championship: Mrs. A. J. Morgan, wth Mrs. G. Nelson runner-up; G grade cup, Miss W. Wilton, with Mis 3 K. Dick runner-up; bronze medal, Mrs. G. Nelson; electric competition (A), Mrs. Morgan; (B), Miss Hoggard; (C), Mrs. W. Darley and Miss B Boyd equal; handicap reduced most, Miss K. Dick—to 28. The ladies held the usual successful tournament on the King's Birthday. The winner of the men's senior championship was J. Richardson, with J. G. Swuinson runner-up. Intermediate championship: B. Mills (second time), with A. W. Bisset runner-up* junior championship: A. Mills, with T. Murphy runnerup; Day cup, R. Mills, with S. K. Siddells runner-up; four-ball: W. A. Darley and A. J. Morgan. Inter-club matches: Both ladies' and men's teams made visits to neighbouring clubs during the season, fixtures which, were greatly enjoyed by all. The ladies were successful in a challenge against Eketahuna for the Cecil rose bowl, and the men retained the Gregorie cup in a match against Eketahuna Labour Day tournament: The annual tournament held during Labour weekend was most successful despite bad weather conditions, the main event being won by J. Richardson, with S. K. Siddells runner-up. Donations: Many thanks are due to Mr. Brechin who so kindly aided the club by donating sufficient money to enable the ladies' clubroom to be matchlined and a floor put down. It is certain that the ladies are very appreciative of Mr. Brechin's genorous action, as their comforts have been greatly added to thereby. The flag in the club colours was donated by Mr. J. Richardson and the flagpole by Mr. A. Donald. The ploughing of the greens was done by Mr. Norman Avery at very small cost to the club. General: During the year a permanent groundsman was engaged in conjunction with the tennis club. A completely new nine-hole course has been laid out wth large greens whch are n wonderful order for the short time they have been down. The club’s thanks are due to Mr. A. Donald for the tremendous amount of work he has put in as leader of the grounds committee. The lengths of the holes have been measured and the top wires of the fences where they cross the fairway lowered to eliminate the necessity for styles. The new lay-out makes the most of every natural peculiarity and a most interesting course is in the making. A reply has been received from Mr. A. J. .Show, New Zealand's best-known golf jjrofessional, who is now attached to the Masterton club, promising to come to Pahiatua to give lessons early in the season. It is hoped that there will be a good response to the call for working bee’s (many hands make light work) as there are still many odd jobs to be done. Thanks are extended to the Press for the publicity given to the club's activities. The election of officers resulted as under:—President, Mr. J. G. Swainson; vice-president, Mr. J. G.
