Sandon

From Our "Own Correspondei* v . Proposed Improvements to Hall,

A well attended meeting of tne various orgryiisations was held to discuss proposalsc ’for extending the east wall of the main hall a further nine feet. Mr J. C. Fagan presided and the following organisations were represented: Women’s Institute, Plunket Society, Table Tennis Club, Miniature Rifle Club, Football Club, Manawatu County Council Social Committee, Cribbage Club, Sanson branch of the Labour Pary, Old Boys Association, Sports

Club, together with several other individuals interested in the proposal. The chairman outlined the proposals, and stated that Mr Eglinton’s estimate to renew the wall was approximately £IOO. A further

estimate to move the wall back 10 feet and renew lining with timber, plus an

outer wall of iron was estimated to cost £152, or alternatively to finish the whole job in timber at an estimated cost of £176 was supplied by Mr H. V. Bond. Several delegates spoke and gave their personal opinions, but as the meeting had been called hurriedly, considered that the matter should not be finalised until the individual bodies had a little more time to give thought to the matter. Mr Pearce

considered that as it was imperative that the east wall be renewed, the opportunity should be taken to enlarge the hall by moving back the wall as suggested. Mr E. J. Bowater congratulated the hall committee on the excellent work already done but could not agree that more room was necessary, as he considered that with perhaps the exception of one or two occasions in the year, sufficient space was already available. Mr B. Laurence was not of this opinion, and supported the proposal to enlarge the hall. Mr G. Williams asked in the event of the improvements suggested being carried out. would this affect the rentals now being charged. The chairman stated that he did not think the rentals would be increased. Mr D. Leitch suggested a sinking fund being established for a new building, for the future generation; however, it was stated that the Park Board had the scheme in operation. After considerable discussion, the following resolution was carried: ’That this meeting adjourn 'until April 6, in order' to give organisations time (o discuss the proposals and to give definite instructions to their representatives on the question.” It was resolved to invite three delegates from each ihterested body to attend this meeting, and to obtain an estimate for the repair of the existing wall in its standing position. The various organisations are to be supplied with estimated costs for alternative proposals.

Mr Harold Butler, of Hawera, was the week-end guest of Mr and Mrs E. N. Butler. Annual Meeting of Lbour Party.
