MANGAMUTU TENNIS CLUB CONSIDERING EASTER TOURNAMENT

At a special meeting of the Mangamutu Tennis Club Mr. J. G. Brechin presided over a fair attendance. The chairman reported that the committee, finding the working bee part not the success anticipated, had engaged Mr. Lett, to finish the fencing, an expenditure ivrhich had been slightly more than the committee had been authorised to incur.. On the motion of Messrs Heayns and Pat O’Brien the committee’s action was endorsed. After due consideration it was decided to have the formal opening of the new courts on Saturday, March 5. A dance was arranged for that night, and it was decided to engage a caterer to supply supper and secure special help that night for dispensing same. The secretary was instructed to issue complimentary invitations to the secretary and president of kindred clubs. The master of ceremonies, Mr. Dave O’Brien, was appointed to draw up a programme of modern and old-time dances. A discussion took place anent the holding of an open tournament for the three days of Easter. Mr. O’Brien explained that it was proposed to hold both ladies’ and men’s singles and also doubles events. It was stated that the contractors had authorised play on the new courts provided the weather was not hot and sunny, and in view of this several members thought that it would be inadvisable to hold such a tournament as was proposed this year. Those advancing this opinion said they were not against the holding of the tournament but were merely concerned over the courts, which they were most anxious to see given every chance. Finally it was agreed that the committee should endeavour to ascertain the views of the members on the official opening day, and only go ahead with the tournament if the majority were in favour. Mrs. L. J. Heayns was given a hearty vote of thanks for making a cushion for competition in order to raise funds for the club.
