Hoiben, of Palmerston North, was elected a life member of the New Zealand Brass Bauds’ Association at the annual meeting of that body yesterday. Mr. Hoiben was secretary of the old North Island Brass Bands’ Association for 25 years and later occupied the position of president for several years. Mr. L. Hunter, mining engineer in charge of the Labour Department’s gold prospecting scheme in tne Rcefton and Westland districts, has accepted a position with a mining group operating in the Federated Malay {States and {Siam. He was a former student of the Coromandel {School of Mines, and has had considerable experience both in New Zealand and overseas.

Mr. W. }S. la Trobe, director of the teciiuical school division oi the Education Department, wus tendered a farewell at a function held at the Hamilton Technical High {School on Wednesday. Tlie principal, Mr. VV. Fraser, expressed regret that Mr., La Trobe was retiring, and said that the service was losing a most valuable official and an old and esteemed friend.

Williams, second officer of the Government lighthouse steamer Matai, who has had nearly 37 years of strenuous service in Government lighthouse steamers, has retired on superannuation and on Tuesday ho was met by the head office staff of the Marine Department and representatives of the lighthouse service and presented with a reading lamp, a travelling case and a rug, as a token of the very great esteem in which he is held.
