An impressive tribute to the bereavement suffered by the Vvanganui Garrison Band was paid yesterday by the bands attending me New Zealand brass bauds contest, when they solemnly marched in procession through the city, Loading the funeral of the late Mrs. Francis, mother of the conductor auu another member of the Wanganui bdnu and the wife of Mr. W. Francis, another player. The cortege lined up in Main street east and Princess street, 16 bands being on parade. At the head was the Pal merston North Garrison Band, while bringing up the rear, immediately preceding the hearse, was the Wanganui Garrison Band. Only these two bands had their instruments, and as the procession moved off *they played ‘‘The Dead March" (in ‘‘Saul"), in Princess street the eortege turned into Broadway and moved down the Square to the Bank of New Zealand corner, then turning into Raugitikei street. At Grey street each band opened up and halted to let the following bands go through. Lining the route were hundreds of spectators. With the hearse as pall-bearers were Messrs. E. Palliser and J. G. Osborne (president and secretary of the New Zealand Brass Bands’ Association), W. P. MacLachlan and A. G. Homer (supervisors at the contest), A. E. Mansford (Mayor of Palmerston North) and E. P. Kerry {judge). Attending the funeral were Mr. W. J, Rodgers (Mayor of Wanganui) and Cr. J., tiiddells (Deputy Mayor). From Grey street the hearse went on to Wanganui, where the interment took place in the afternoon. MAYOR OF TIMARU BURIED LARGE FUNERAL CORTEGE TIMARU, Last Night. Garlanded with many beautiful floral tributes and followed by an exceptionally large cortege, the remains of the late Mayor of Timaru, Mr. P. C. Viunell, this afternoon moved through the streets of the town which he served so well. The funeral, which was an expression of tho universal respect in which Mr. Vinnell was held by all sections of the community, was one of the largest which Timaru has seen.
