Worth Knowing
To take dressing out of tea towels, glass cloths, etc., add a teaspoon of Epsom salts to a pint of water, soak articles in solution for an hour, then rinse and dry in the sun. Lead is an excellent lubricator. Try the tip of a lead pencil on a squeaking door hinge, and notice the result. When the mincer needs oiling, use glycerine instead of machine oil. This will prevent the food being tainted. If knitting a bed wrap for an invalid with throat or chest trouble, do not use swansdown for edging. It is so fluffy that pieces may be swallowed by the patient.
If meat has to be pickled, and you are in doubt as to the quantity of salt to use, place a medium-sized peeled potato in the water and add salt till the potato floats on the brine. Cooked green peas, mashed with butter into a smooth paste, will make a “different” sandwich filling. Add cayenne and curry powder to taste.
