NUMBER OF OFFENCES RECORDED. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided at the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Palmerston North yesterday. A further remand for a week was granted the police in the case against Mrs Margaret Mathieson Scott Hart, aged 33 years, who was charged with the theft at Pahiatua of silk stockings valued at 7/6 and books valued at £2 from G. H. Bennett and Co., Palmerston North. Bail in two sureties of £SO each was renewed. There was also a remand for a week in the case against Edward Ryan, labourer, aged 36, who was charged with receiving shoes, pyjamas and a shirt of a total value of £2 ss, from Hart, well knowing that they had been dishonestly obtained. Bail in two sureties of £SO each was renewed. Lee Hing, a chinaman, found drunk in the Palmerston North hospital grounds late Sunday night, was fined 20/-, this being his second offence within six months. Robert George Gibson, aged 21, labourer, charged with committing an indecent act, was remanded for a week on the application of his counsel, Mr G. I. McGregor. Roy Burnett was fined £3 with 16s costs for driving a car without due care and attention on Foxtou line. He was also fined £1 with 10s costs for not having a warrant of fitness for the car. Chan Tat Choy, ot Rongotea, admitted selling intoxicating liquor without a license. His counsel, Mr F. Opie, said Choy had got in beer prior to Christmas intending to make presents to his customers. As soon as it was known he had beer, he became a most popular resident m the town. His Worship said he would have to pay for his popularity. —Fined £ls with 10s costs.

L. A. Clode who drove over a railway line in front of a train, was fined £2 with 10s costs. Robert Fred Cook failed to give way to traffic on his right and was involved in a collision. He admitted the offence and was fined £2 with 10s costs. Alan Croon admitted casting offensive matter in a public place and was fined £2 with 10s costs. Victor Bullivan drove a motor-cycle without due care and attention on Kankitikei line and was fined £2 with 10s costs. For having no warrant of fitness for the machine, ho was fined £1 with 10s costs. William Henry Tooley was lined 10s with 10s costs for failing to give way to a pedestrian on a cheveron crossing. Samuel Andrews was fined £3 and 10s costs for driving a car at a dangerous speed. Evidence disclosed that he overtook a number of cars on Rangitikei line at 60 m.p.k. For having no warrant of fitness for the car defendant was fined £1 with 10s costs. B. F. Ellinghaui (Ormonvillc), who was said to have overtaken traffic at 55 in.p.h. on the Palmerston North-Bulls highway and subsequently travelled at 65 m.p.li. to get home to milk cows, was fined £3 with 10s costs on a dangerous driving charge . G. H. Blanche who admitted driving over a railway crossing at Rangiotu in front of a train, was lined £2 with 15s" costs. M. E. Nathan admitted dangerous driving over the (Jook-Collcge street extension, Palmerston North, and was fined £2 with 10s costs. {Stanley Walters drove a van without holding a driver’s license and without having a warrant of fitness for the vehicle.—Fined 10s with 10s costs on the first charge and £1 with 10s costs on the second. Thomas Bernard Ellis, in arrears with maintenance due his wife, to the amount of £l4 11s 6d, was sentenced to two months gaol, the warrant to be suspended so long us lie pays current maintenance of £1 5s a week plus 10s a week off the arrears. The warrant will be suspended so long as he keeps current maintenance of 10s a week paid plus 10s a week off the arrears. Alfred George Carwood was fined £2 with £4 5s 3d for driving without due care and attention. The charge was the result of a collision on the Whirokino bridge.
