Building Work At the Hospital

REMODELLING OF TWO-STOREY BLOCK.

”The scheme for remodelling the two-storcy block, at present the Royal Alexandra and Children’s Ward, has been finalised, and subject to minor adjustments, Ministerial consent should now be issued in a day or two,” stated Mr A. J. Phillipps (managing-secre-tary) in a report to the Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday. We are anxious to push on with this work and to call tenders before the next meeting of tho board. “As regards financing this work, I would now recommend that, instead of borrowing £3OOO, as originally proposed, we levy £ISOO during the coming year and the balance will then be paid as subsidy. It will be realised that, owing to the delay that has taken place in connection with the laundry and other items on the building programme, there will be no increase in the capital levy to meet loan commitments during the coming financial year. I had previously' anticipated that we would have been able to have started some of our major capital work before this. Consequently, this levy can be met even if it is decided to retain the capital levy at the same figure for 1938-39 as was levied for 1937-38, namely, £6225, and I would recommend accordingly.” The board adopted tho suggestion and decided to make the necessary provision in next year ’s estimates.
