Band Contest

To-day the New Zealand championship bands congest begins in earnest. All of the bands have reached the city and those not engaged in solo work will be busily employed practising for the various tests and quickstep display which will marl: the contest. The E flat and EE flat bass solos will commence in tbs Opera House at 9 a.m. to-day when this adjudicator, Mr. E. P. Kerry, will officiate. At the same time Mr. T. Goodall (assistant judge) will preside in the Municipal Hall to hear the E flat soprstno and baritone solos. A feature of i;o-day’s programme will be the street march competition which will be held when the whole of the bands (17 in number) will march from the rotunda, th<; Square, to the A. and P. Association Showgrounds, Cuba street. The find band moves off at "8 p.m. and the others follow at intervals of three minutes each. At the Showgrounds the official welcome will take place and, in addition, an attractive programme of inter-house sports will be presented by teams representing many local business, firms. In the evening the hymn test will be held and the whole of the bands compete upon equal terms with their own choices in this {selection. Some beautiful hymns are to be presented, including “Abide With Me,” “Nearer My God, to Thee,” “When I Survey,” “Mother Earth”. A musical treat seldom heard in this city, is in store for us. The charges for admission are very low and season tickets for any performance are available at a cost of 7s 6d each. Box plan:? for reserving 'for military quickstep lay (Saturday, 26th) is now open at Messrs. Collinson and Cunninghame’s. There is no additional charge for reserving. School children will be admitted free to the official reception at the Showgrounds. In the event of weather conditions necessitating the holding of the test at the Opera House this fact will be broadcast by radio stations 2YA and 2ZB at 6.30 p.m. In addition a flag displayed on the band rotunda will indicate that the test will be held at the Opera House.
