Athletic Championships

MANAWATU SUB-CENTRE The Manawatu athletic championships for the 1937-38 season were decided at the Levin Domain on Saturday under the auspices of the Levin Combined Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. The running of a programme of about 30 events in a little over two hours was to the credit of the committee comprising Messrs G. Watson (president, starter and handicapper), J. H. Cooper (secretary and handicapper), J. A. Porter (manager), W. H. Hocking (announcer), D. Jackson and C. Stngpoole (referees) and S. Hall and N. Thornley (time keepers). Rain earlier in the day made the track rather heavy for running, which slowed up the times considerably. The take-off for jumping was also a little slippery. There was no wind to hinder competitors.

Rather poor fields were carded for some of the championship events, but club rivalry was keen throughout. G. Simpson won both the sprint events, R. J. Le Bas the quarter mile, C. McVicar the half mile and J. Millar the one mile championships. In the field events the major honours were divided between R. Gillespie, R. Kay and K. Galloway. Mrs. V. Rollerson was the most successful senior woman sprinter and Miss E. Hocking won the junior women’s sprint events. W. Sloan filled first place in both the junior men’s championship events. The clubs represented were: Feilding (F.), Kia Toa (K.T.), Levin (L.), Marton (M.) t Otaki (O.), Palmerston North (P.), Shannon (S.), Wellington (W.), Wanganui (Wg.), Woodville (Wd.).
