Brass Bands

The New Zealand Brass Bands Championship, which is being held from 21st. to 26th. inst., on the Showgrounds, Palmerston, will see the cream of New Zealand talent in competition. The hymn test (own choice) will be contested by 18 bands (7 A grade and 11 B and will commence at' 7 p.m. on Monday, 21st. inst.** The street march and official reception will be on the same day at 2 p.m. On this date all the bands taking part will march at three-minute intervals from the band rotunda in the Square, via Cuba street, to the oval at the Showgrounds, where a short ceremony will take place. Speeches will be made by the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford) chairman of the local organisation, Mr. J. Hodgens, M.P., and Mr. G. Palliser, president of the New Zealand Brass Bands Association. A sports programme of interhouse sports will be tendered by representatives of the various houses in the city, and entries have been received from Woolworths, McKenzies, P.D;C., Rosco and Glaxo. Novelty items will be rendered by visiting bands. The solo competitions will be held daily during the week at the Opera House and Municipal Hall. The adjudicator, Mr. E. J. Kerry, conductor of Randwick Municipal Band, will be assisted in the solo competitions by Mr. T. Goodall. Altogether a splendid programme of band entertainment is to be provided and season tickets (admitting to all performances, including the quickstep competition) are procurable at a cost of 7s 6d each from the secretary (Mr. E. Y. Day, Rangitikei street) and also from Messrs. Goldfinch and Cousins, Ltd., Collinson and Cunninghame, Ltd., W. M. Crystall and W. H. Brown (N.Z.I. Co.).
