Not Anxious to Return to Rabaul
PEOPLE FEARFUL OF REPETITION OF OUTBREAK. United Press Associauon —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Friday, 7 p.m. RABAUL, June 4. The situation between the Administration and local firms is growing rather tense owing to the taking over of foodstuffs by the former. Ihe firms definitely do not approve of returning to Rabaul and are making extensive arrangements to remain in Kokopo, fearful of a repetition of the outbreak, which seemingly is unwarranted. A local paper to-day issued a special evacuation number and urges the marking of time before finality is reached. Bir Walter Carpenter, according to the Sydney Sun, estimates the damage to his company’s property at Rabaul at £35,000, only £IO,OOO of which is not covered by insurance. The damage to the shipping is approximately £25,000 and is covered by marine policies. NEW ZEALAND’S SYMPATHY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The sympathy of the New Zealand Government and that of the people ot the Dominion with the sufferers in the Rabaul eruption has been conveyed to the Australian Government by the Acting-Prime Minister (Hon. P. Fraser). Air Fraser has received a reply from the Acting-Prime Minister of Australia (Dr. Earl Page) expressing appreciation of his message.
