Steamer on Rocks

• AIRMEN. SUMMON AID. LONDON, Nov. 14. Two passenger aerox>lanes flying between. Glasgow and Skye exchanged a dramatic radio call which resulted in a lifeboat being sent to the aid of a Glasgow cargo steamer on the rocks at Islay during the week-end. Chief Pilot David Barclay was flying the morning aeroplane on the North Scottish Airways Line when he saw the steamer apparently in difficulties near Port Ellen. Ho wirelessed to Pilot J. A. Hankins, who Was flying on the return journey to Glasgow.

Hankins veered off his course and located the vessel. Ho circled low, saw that she was on the rocks, and was ablo to read tho name Shuna. Ho wirelessed to the control tower at Renfrew and a message was sent to Lloyd’s. The Islay lifeboat went to the aid ol the ship. There was a heavy sea running and tho lifeboat took off six of the crew, leaving fourteen men on board. They were in no danger. Tugs set out from Glasgow to get the vessel off before tho wind changed. The Shuna, which belongs to Glen and Company, of Glasgow’, was on her way from Glasgow to Sweden with a cargo ol wood pulp. Most of her crew are Glasgow men.
