MOTORISTS AND j OTHERS BEFORE COURT

Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided at the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court sossion yesterday. Harry B. Richards admitted driving a car dangorously at the intersection of Main and George,streets,"the speed being estimated at 30/ to 35 m.p.li.—Fined £2 with costs 3s.

Andrew Vincent Eustegc, charged with dangerously driving over the intersection of Church street and the Square, admitted the offence and was fined £2 with 3s costs. His speed was stated to be-35 m.p.li. Stanley Sames, who cast offensive matter in a public place, was lined £2 with 3s costs.

H. F. Ross who failed to give why to traffic on the right, was fined £1 with 10s costs.

W. J. Barnes (Ashhurst) who also failed to give way to traffic on his right (thero was a collision) was fined a similar amount.

Dorothy Burrell (Feilding) charged with dangerous driving over tho Matipo street intersection of Rangitikei street, was fined £1 with 15s costs. Her speed was stated to bo between 30 and 35 m.p.h. A remand was granted to December 11 in a case in which Frederick B. Grotrian, of Komako, is charged with cutting five totara trees in a reservo without permission of the Minister. Joe Ning was fined 10s with 10s costs for riding a bicyclo at night without a light. J, Clarke (Kairanga) charged by Inspector-Berry with dangerous driving along Maxwell's line, was fined £2 with 12s costs. inspector Berry gave evidence that Clarko pulled out of the lino of traffic coming away' from tho Awapuni racecourse on Labour Day. J. Clarke, Jnr., similarly charged, paid a similar penalty. Defendants were father and son and Mr Berry said the father followed in his son's wheel tracks when the latter broke out of the lino of cars.

J. Colville who cut a traffic dome when coming away from tho Awapuni Course, was also fined £2 with 12s costs. F. Watson pleaded guilty to exceeding the 25 m.p.h. speed limit fixed for a heavy lorry. Inspector Berry said he trailed defendant along the AshkurstPohangina road at 45 m.p.h. in parts. Only recently tho speed had been increased to 25 m.p.h., previously this type of vehicle having been limited to 15 m.p.h.—Fined £3 with 10s costs. C. M. Cano (Hunterville) was sentenced to 14 days’ gaol to be released on payment of £2 ls -6d- maintenance due his wife and £3 Is 5d maintenance due his five children.-

A. W, Gilchrist (Danuevirke) in arrears to the extent of £SB 10s with maintenance, was sentenced to 3 months’ gaol, tho warrant to be suspended so long as ho pays £1 5s a week. Wm. N. Thompson (Gisborne) was sentenced to two months’ gaol, to be released on payment of £9 15s maintenance duo his three children and £9 15s due his wife.

G Hamish Wilson (Bulls) denied a charge of negligently driving a car over the Boundary road-Rangitikei line intersection, lie had been involved in a collision with a lorry. Defendant declared that he had checked his speed on the speedometer just before the collision and it had b‘ecn 23 m.p.h. The lorry was on his left and should have given way to him but ho did not see it until the collision was about to occur.

The police evidence was to the effect that the lorry had been travelling at little more than 5 m.p.h. and that there was plenty of vision on Wilson’s left. His Worship thought defendant should have seen the lorry and imposed a fine of £2 with costs 17s. Not keeping a proper look out constituted negligent driving. D. R. Brice, charged with keeping a .dog that had bitten a,child, was lined £1 with 18s costs.
