City Council and Power Board

FORMER TO MAKE OVERTURES. "That the City Council approach the Power Board in an endeavour to effect a settlement of tho dispute over power costs.” This was a resolution carried by the council last night on the initiative of Cr. J. Ilodgens, M.P. In moving in that direction, he said ho did so because of his knowledge of the desire of certain people to have the matter settled without Court proceedings. Misunderstandings as a consequence of the different viewpoints of the two parties were resulting in strained relationships getting wider, and it was desirable that the position should be bridged. He thought there was a possibility of the dispute being settled on terms which would bo satisfactory to both parties. It was only a question of compromising, which the council had endeavoured to do all along. As far as the Public Works Minister was concerned, he was still of the same opinion as when ho met representatives of the council and Power Board several months ago—that, if tho two local bodies could come to an understanding, the department, which was responsible for the penal rate, would then negotiate with the council, with every possibility of a satisfactory settlement. The solicitor to tho Municipal Supply Authorities’ Association had been in touch with him, Cr. Hodgens added, arid his opinion had been that the stage was now set where it was possible for an understanding to be arrived at. The speaker had previously opposed the council paying more than 21 per cent, above standard rates, although most of the members of the council’s special committee had been agreeablo to 5 per cent.

Seconding the proposal, the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) said that an amicable settlement would be better than a Court action. That was what the couucil had stood for all the time, but, unfortunately, it had not been able to bridge the gap.

Tho motion was carried without further comment, and the council then discussed tho matter further in committee.
