Rail-car Service to Foxton
TO SOLVE HOUSING SHORTAGE
The suggestiou that in order to meet tho demands for labour for the woolpack factory at Foxt.on a rail-car service between Palmerston North and Foxton should bo instituted as advanced by the clerk (Mr. W. Trueman) at a mooting of the Foxton Borough Council, when lettors were read from the factory company and tho Foxton Chamber of Commerce, complaining of the house shortage existing in Foxton at the present time and the urgent need for more accommodation for employees at tho woolpack factory. The council was recommended to take advantage of the Government’s housing scliemo as a means of solving tho problem. Tho Mayor (Mr M. E. Perreau) said careful and serious consideration would have to be. given to the suggestions. The factory was undoubtedly a great asset to the town and district as a whole and if the council could see its way clear to build a number of houses under the Government’s scheme it should do so. Unfortunately at the moment, however, the council had nothing before it in this connection. There were plenty of sections available in Foxton as building sites. The clerk said a rail-car servico would probably be the best solution to the factory difficulty. If a service could be inaugurated between Palmerston North and Foxton to bring young people to the factory the labour difficulty would bo overcome. Ho suggested a service bringing operatives down early iu tho ( morning and returning in mid-morning ‘as an ordinary passenger run. The return to Foxton could be made lato in tho afternoon and the operatives conveyed back to Palmerston North after 5 p.m. It was decided to hold the matter over until particulars concerning the Government’s building scheme were before the council.
