Air Hostesses

NEW CAEEERS FOE GIRLS AUSTRALIAN APPOINTMENTS MELBOURNE, March 12. An interesting new profession for girls lias been initiated in Melbourne with the appointment of the first “air hostesses’' on the airmail route between Victoria and Tasmania. Although only two girls have been chosen, an extension of the service to other routes is expected to take place in the near future, and there is already a waiting list from which further appointments will be made.

Miss Blanche Due, of East Malvern, a Melbourne suburb, and Miss M. E. Grucber, of Hobart, are the first appointees. They will begin their duties on April G, when the new Douglas airliner will have arrived from America. In the meantime Miss Due will go to T

asmania to make herself familiar with tourist facilities there.

Both girls have obtained their A class pilot’s licence, and both have sonic experience of nursing and book-keeping. The two air hostesses will be on duty on alternate days, and when not in the air they will act as “ground hostess" at the aerodrome. They will probably wear Holynian Airways uniform, which is navy blue with brass buttons and white cap. A knowledge of nursing is essential for an air hostess, not so much for actual medical knowledge but for the experience of handling people so that nervous or fussy people may be dealt with successfully. Air sickness is most frequently due to nervousness in those who have not flown before.
