Waituna West

From Our. Own Correspondent.' There was a fair attendance of members for the animal meeting of the Waituna West Women’s Institute, which was held on Thursday. Mrs J. li. Williamson was in the chair. The report of the group meeting held at Waituna AVest in February was given. Tho report and balance sheet showed a very good year’s work. The following committee was elected: Mesdames J. H. Williamson. A. E. Shannon, Petersen, Stokes, A. E. Pearce, It. Northcote, Stone and Misses K. England, M. Clare and J. Batchelar. Mrs J. H Williamson'was re-elected as president Miss J. Batchelar ■ continuing as secretary and treasurer for another year. It was decided our Institute llower be a scarlet single geranium. The leaf guessing was won by Mrs A. E. Shannon. The competition for next .month will be six pieces, of shortbread, and also a roll call entitled “limericks on our Institute.” Arrangements were made for the birthday which will take place 111 May this year as an afternoon function; A hearty invitation is extended to all.lnstitutes.to attend our birthday. Two new members were welcomed. The president and secretary were elected as delegates to attend tlie council meeting at Palmerston North in April. Mrs A. E. Pearce extended a very hearty vote of thanks to tho jiresident and secretary. Carnival Evening. Another sporty evening was held on Friday last in Cheltenham in aid of the sports queen candidate, Miss Joyce Batchelar. Again a large number of. enthusiastic card players and dancers turned up to enjoy a good evening's entertainment, Mrs Trevor Shannon, of Waituna West'; being the hostess for this function. The cards were continued until 10 o’clock when the ladies served supper. Mr J. W. Batchelar then presented the prizes to the winners of the cards, those being: Bridge, Mrs Jack Old, Waituna West, Mr Ivan Old, Waituna West; 500, Miss Dulcie Coleman, Waituna West, and Mr C. Cameron; crib, Mrs Finlayson and Mr Dave Logan, Pahlnttni. The lamp shade competition was also drawn, tho winner being Miss Dorothy Gladstone, of Pahiatua. Dancing continued till midnight. the music being kindly contributed by Mr Hansen, of Kimbolton. on the piano and Mr McKay, of Kimbolton, the saxophone. Everyone is looking forward to next Friday night, which is to be the final entertainment in Cheltenham for the sports queen candidate. Of the many teams that entered in the Feilding athletic sports on Saturday last the Waituna West School children were fortunate in winning the sole-teacher country shield, known as the Collins Shield, which is a great honour to them. 1
