Makomako

From Our Own Correspondent, • • • Valedictory Social. On Friday evening the residents of Makomako tendered a farewell social to Mr C. “Bert” Davis, ivno is leaving life district after a period of about nine years, and their efforts were strongly supported by the Ballance Football Club, of which Mr Davis has been a member since its inception. Tho stage was attractively decorated with bowls of dahlias and gladioli and Mr G. Hoggard presided. Each item contributed to tho concert programme was warmly received, particularly popular numbers being given by Miss Daphne Ebbett (a former resident) .who supplied violin and vocal items (in the latter generously responding to a double encore), and Mr Martin, of Dannevirke, who delighted the audience with songs and elocutionary items in character. Other items were songs by-Mrs F. C. Ebbett and Mrs R. McKenzie; elocution, Miss A. M. Sargent; piano solo}*. Miss Joyce Ebbett. An encore was demanded'ln each case. Accompaniments were played -by Mrs B. Harwood, of Palmerston North and Miss Liddell, of Dannevirke. The presentation of a travelling rug and a clock from Makomako residents was made by Mr G. Hoggard and that of a wallet from the Ballance Footbad Club was made by Mr C. Wilton, each speaker making reference to the many good qualities and the popularity of the guest of the evening, who had entered into and helped In practically every club existent in the district, taking a prominent part In tho tennis club and the hall society. Mr F. C.' Ebbett also spoke of the personal loss which would he felt by himself and family in parting with so trusted a lieutenant after so many years’ happy association. Mr Davis, who made fitting response, was accorded musical honours. Supper was handed round to a large number of guest's and dancing was afterwards continued until the small hours of tho morning. Spirited dance music was supplied by Mrs A. Tait, assisted by Mr F. Ebbett, violin, extras being kindly, played by Mrs Harwood and Mr Hoggard. Mrs L. Weld is tho guest of her parents, Mr and Kirs W. Fay, Mr and Mrs H. Sargent, of Wanganui, -were weekend visitors to the district. Miss 11. Beech was a visitor. to Tarnduring the week.
