Old Cheviot Homestead Destroyed

END or HISTORIC LANDMARK. Per PrUss Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The. old homestead of the Cheviot estate was destroyed by fire this morning. The house was unoccupied. At 5.30 a teamster who was lying awake iu his quarters in the manager’s house noticed a glow as of (ire and aroused tho occupants. Tho houso was already burning fiercely and nothing could be done to save it. The house was a landmark in the district and contained more than 40 rooms. Arrangements had recently been made to pull down tho houso , for the timber which was ajl heart of totura and hoart of kauri in good preservation. The work of demolition should have begun to-day. The house, which was the property of the cstato of J. Connolly, formerly ALP., was insured for £2OOO in the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation.
