Silver Ring Off to Australia

WITHDRAWAL FROM AWAPUNI CUP (Special to "Times.”) GREY'AIOUTH, Last Night. No doubt duo to his recent gallant effort in winning tho Thonipspn Handicap in Wellington tho sudden decision to take the champion Silver Riug to Australia this week has been made by his owner, Air A. H. Walton, of Greyiuouth. The horso was set down to contest aud had actually accepted for the Awapuni (Jup, to be run on Friday next, but according to present arrangements there is little or no likelihood that he will fulfil the engagement, aud it is a line sporting spirit on the part of his connections to pub licly announce the'fact, as the Awapuni Cup field will no doubt< now be stronger numerically’ thau would possibly have bccu the case otherwise. There are four weight-for-ago races in Australia which Silver King will tackle, tho first of which is either at Warwick Farm or Rand wick in about three weeks. The horse will bo m Australia only' a month, when he returns to Greymouth.

The reason for the sudden decision on the- doputure of Silver Ring was stated by the owner to night to be owing to the fact that the horse had no other races to suit him in the Dominion, and as he is now well aud there is a likelihood, as with all horses, that he may lose form in the spring, it is' considered that there is no time like the present when opportunities arc offering.

Tho owner also considered that the impost (possibly’ list.) in the Autumn Handicap at the (J.J.C. meeting would be too great, whilst no other engage ments are iu view. He considers that Silver Ring will be allotted no more than 3.12 in the weight-for-ago. engagements in Australia. If the horse retains his present form Silver Ring, after his return to New Zealand aud after his weight-for-nge engagements, may be taken to Alclbournc agaiu in the spring, the Alelbournc Cup being a hopeful prospect in tho mind of his owner, also the weight-for-ago races. A. E. Ellis will pilot the horse io Australia.
