From Our Own Oorrespondent,

Arrangements ar-e well in hand for the garden party to be held at tho spacious grounds of Mr M. W. Voss on Wednesday next. It is to be hoped the clerk of the weather will favour the event with a fine day and so crown with success the efforts being made by the local Women’s Institute.

On Sunday evening—the close of a perfect summer’s day—cars passed through the district on the main highway at the rate of 360 an hour during a period of about three hours. There was a constant roar of traffic and a continual stream of light. It is some years since the growth of pastures has been as luscious at this period of the year as at present. In spite of storms, etc., the cows are milking well and butterfat returns are far in excess of last year, which it will be remembered, was exceptionally dry. It is a pleasure to see chou moellier crops back to their usual status. For two years the white butterfly waged war and it was not until the cold of late autumn breathed death to the menace that much growth in the crops was made. There are certainly a few butterflies this season, but only enough to do minor damage to cabbages in the kitchen garden. Potato crops are being dug but are very disappointing in most cases. The very wet spring has told its tale and the seed sown on this occasion will not bring forth Its fruit. Mangold crops look promising, and the reputation which the district has for high yields of this winter standby will most assuredly be upheld. Personal.

■ Miss E. Voss is returning shortly from her visit to Johnsonville. There is a slight improvement in the condition of Master Hugh Dampney . Miss M. Rowland and Miss J.' Hearsey have been at the school for Women’s Institute officers, held at the Foxton beach during the week-end.
