Daring a recent visit to the Catlins district, a resident of Dunedin was shown a rata tree with white flowers. Bushmen who had spent the greater part of their lives among New Zealand’s native forests expressed themselves as knowing nothing of such a species, and regarded the tree as something of a freak. Some of the flowers were brought back to Dunedin and inquiries made by a Daily Times reporter elicited the information from a nurseryman who has made a study of native bush that a white-flowering rata is sometimes found in the Catlins district. It is not a freak, but a separate species named Metrosideros albiflora. There are also to be found a white climbing rata (Metrosideros scandeus) and a palo yellow or pale pink rata
