The necessity for providing a standby electrical plant at the Auckland Hospital for use during power failures was stressed by the medical superintendent, Dr. J. W. Craven, at a meeting of the Hospital Board. The question of purchasing a suitable electrical plant was referred to the purchasing committee. The two-year-old child of a worker employed at Otara, near Opotiki, was attacked by a rat one night recently. The mother heard the child crying and at first took no notice, thinking the child was all right. When the crying became worse she investigated and found that a rat had gnawed the tops of several of the child’s fingers, bipod being all over the bed clothes.
