Man’s Face Gashed

ASSAILANT ARRESTED BY DETECTIVES.

Per Press Association.

WELLINGTON, Jan. 11,

A long vigil by detectives was rewarded last evening by the arrest of a man allegedly connected with the knife or razor assault at Lambton Quay yesterday. James Logie, alias Kelly, aged 33, a labourer, was charged to-day with wounding Charles Crooke with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The police asked for a remand and accused for bail.

Detective-Sorgcant Bevell said that there was trouble between the two men and ho thought, in his own interests, Kelly should bo confined in the meantime. In addition, the assault was rather serious as it was done with a knife and there was just a possibility that it might be repeated if they met again. Bail was refused.

While the morning traffic was at its height in Lambton Quay about 10.35 on Friday, an affray in which a man had the side of his face gashed with what is believed to have been a razor took place on the western side of the street near the intersection of Panama Street. The affair was over within a few seconds, and before the large number of passers-by had realised what had happened the assailant had made off, leaving his victim bleeding profusely.
