Stanway

From Our Own Correspondent. Tho following meteorological observations have been obtained from tho local school for the month of February, which bid fair to prove disastrous to farmers had not the drought broken towards the end of tiie month. During the three days February 21, 22, 23, tho rain gauge recorded a fall of 5.S I inches, which changed the aspect of the country completely. Where there were dry, brown fields, empty dams and dried-up creeks, are now green paddocks, overflowing dams and running streams. The maximum morning temperature recorded was 74 degrees F. and the minimum, after the rain, 56 degrees. The temperature in tho schoolroom exceeded S 5 degrees F. on several occasions. The barometer maintained an average reading until February 20, when a threepoint drop heralded the rain, after which it rose to its previous readings again. Women's Institute Picnic.

The local branch of the Women’s Institute held their picnic on Saturday last in beautifully fine weather, in that popular spot on the banks of the Rangitikei river at Onepuhi. The members of the branch turned out on masse and a most enjoyable day was spent by all. Arrangements were made whereby there were sports and games for all, and a large number of novelty events kept the crowd amused throughout tho aftornoon. The somewhat fresh breeze that blew in the afternoon had no terrors for the waterlovers and swimming was indulged in at frequent intervals. Concert by Nigger Minstrels. A somewhat unusual noto in the way of entertainments in Stanway will be struck on Wednesday of next week, when the local nigger minstrel troupe will put on their first performance. A number of tho local gentlemen had been practising assiduously for some long time before Christmas to put on their show just after tho school breaking up, but unfortunately it had to bo postponed. Now the old keenness has been renewed and for the last few weeks, on certain nights, the hall lias resounded with the ever-popular “darkie” songs, solos and choruses. Jokes and burlesques and parodies are being worked up and patrons will be assured of an amusing and enjoyable evening. Much musical talent will be displayed, and no trouble is being spared to bring the musical section of the performance to perfection. The first half of the programme will be arranged by tho Women’s Institute, and will include items from the local talent, schoolchildren and Highland dancers, while the second section will consist entirely of the minstrels. A dance will follow, good music being supplied, and the Women’s Institute will cater for the supper. Prices have been arranged to suit the times and the proceeds are to go to the school and the local branch of the Institute. General. There will be a comparatively large number of entries from the local school in the schools’ sports to be held in Feilding on Saturday, and the children are putting every ounce into their training for their various events. Friends of Mr. Parry James will bo pleased to hear that he is progressing very favourably and expects to return home very soon.
