Mr G. A. Monk asked if there was likely to be any opposition to the granting of licenses to the board? The secretary (Mr A. J. Watering-cans, buckets, basin 3 or any domestic utensil that will carry water are requisitioned to cope with the apparently doomed crops. If the opinion of a local gardener of many years’ experience is correct, however, there is no need for these householders to despair of saving their crops in rainless weather. According to this authority a persistent hoeing of the ground around the vegetables will keep the growth going and drive

the roots downward in search oi the moisture that is stored below in the driest of seasons. <j> <S> <i> <?> Court costs in connection with the recent action between the Palmerston North City Council and ManawatuOroua Power Board amounted to 10U guineas and have been awarded the City Council by the Chief .Justice. <S> <s> <j> <s> The month of October saw 5529 more passengers using the municipal bus service than in October, 1933. However, they were finding it difficult to mainfain the supply, the books becoming much battered by constant usage, and some disappearing. They were also finding that the response to appeals was not so great as formerly. The board decided to thank Toe H for its work in this direction and to refer the matter of a grant to the estimates for consideration. <•/ <*> <*> The managing-secretary reported to the Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday that October had been one of the best months of the year for patients’ fees. Whereas at the end of September the total was £260 below the estimate for the six months, October had seen that margin reduced to £76. If the collection of fees kept up at the October rate, at the end of the year the total would certainly equal the estimate and probably exceed it. The total fees collected amounted to £10,424 for the seven months ended October 31. On the other hand the secretary reported hospital maintenance for the same seven months as £2OOO over the seven months’ estimate of £17,5000. This was due to the large number of patients the institution had had to deal with. <s> <S> <s> ❖ When the late Mrs SnoWs, au excedingly well-known resident of the city, died in December, 1919, the residue of her estate was bequeathed to the Palmerston North Hospital Board. To yesterday’s meeting of the board, the accountant (Mr W. H. Galbraith) reported that in addition to what the board had already received, it had since been ascertained the estate was entitled to an interest in another intestate estate to the value of £4S 13s 4d. The board yesterday decided to place the amount in a hospital comforts fund and -the secretary said he would table at next meeting a report showing the relative urgency of the comforts needed at the hospital'. There is a similar amount due from the estate., but this is subject to the interests of a life tenant.
