Queen Carnival Arrangements Discussed

GARRISON BAND COMMITTEE. Col. J. H. Why to presidod over a mooting of the Palmerston North Garrison .Band Committee, when there were also present: Messrs. F. J. Oakley, J. P. Cowlishaw, A. V. Middlemiss, C. Piko (conductor), H. Booker, G. Short and W. Creighton. Apologies for absenco were received from Messrs. A. Clarko and W. C. Loudon. Reporting on the proposed queen carnival, the chairman stated that it. had been decided to pool the funds, the band instrumental in raising the largest amount to be allocated 35 per cent, of the profits, the second 33 per cent, and the third 32 per cent. The chairman further mentioned that each band would nominate ft queen and that the carnival would run for probably three weeks. The band would be represented on the general committee, while it would be necessary to appoint the band’s own committee to work for its queen. Messrs. Pike and Hopwood and Col. Whyte were appointed as the representatives on the general committee. It was mentioned that the ladies’ committee had met and had decided to hold a social evening at the band hall, when invitations would be extended the members of the City and Pipe Bands, it being hoped to bring the members of the three musical organisations, and their wives and lady friends together thereby. Mr. Oakley moved that the hall be made available to the committee for the purpose, and this was agreed to. He commented that due thought would have to be given to selection of a queen, the chairman remarking that the committee could think the matter over before the next meeting. General Matters. 'Plie Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association advised that the band had been granted permission to practise marching on the oval at the Showgrounds and to play test pieces in the stadium for the 1!>35 band contest. Practices are not to take place during the church hours if held on Sundays. An application for the use of the hall on September 2(1 or 27 was received from the Sunshine Club and it was decided to grant the use of the hall on the usual terms, the committee to make a refund of half the fee as a donation to the charitable funds of the dull. Mr. Pike reported that the band would be conducting a slow melody competition in conjunction with the Fcilding Band on September 20. It was also contemplated that the Robert Cup competition be held on a Thursday towards the end of nest month.
