West End School Committee Meets

ROLL NUMBER INCREASES Mr G. Tremaine presided ovor a meeting of the AYest End School Committee held .this week. There wore also present Messrs AV. E. Schwabe, L. Hogg, J- Dalzieli', A. Penketh, H. Con--13 op and AV. Oliver (secretary). A welcome was extended to Mr Dalziell, who took his seat for the first time.. Mr C. D. McKenzie forwarded his resignation as a member of the committee as he was now residing outside the school district. He wished the committee success and assured the members of his co-operation should they require his services at any time. The resignation was accepted with rogret and Mr A. E. Penfold, Botanical road, was appointed to the vacancy. The West End Scout Committee asked for permission to hol'd a dance in the school hall. It was decided that .the dance could quite well bo held in the course of the usual dance season on an intermediate Tuesday, the usual dances being held on alternate Tuesdays. The AA r anganui Education > Board advised that the sum of £4l Os 8d had been credited to the committee as a third of the yearly capitation grant.— Received. Mr M. H. Oram forwarded thanks to the committee for his re-election to the Wanganui Education Board. —Received, On behalf of the AVest End Swimming Club, Mr A. M. Stevenson (secretary) asked that tho same conditions" be allowed the club this season as last with regard to the use of the school baths. —Granted. The headmaster (Mr H. AV. Jackson) reported that the school had reopened after tho second term holidays with a roll number of 303, an increase of 20 pupils as against the close of the second term. The health of the children generally was good, but the children of one family were away owing 1o there being a case of scarlet fever in the house. The school had been visited on the previous day and that day by the departmental special classes officer, Miss AV. A. Valentine. The headmaster acknowledged with t.hanks the gift of four books of wallpaper patterns from Messrs Alexander Clark, Ltd. ‘•I will be pleased if the eommitteo will consider tho question of the establishment of an up-to-date library in the school,” added the report. “Most of the books hero are old, dilapidated and unsuitable. I understand that tho Education Board will subsidise expenditure on libraries to the extent of 25 per cent.. I shall be pleased also to be advised whether the new playing area may be used for baseball, rounders, and cricket during the present term.” Representations had been made to the Education Board for the provision of a teachers’ room so that tlie present teachers’ room could bo used as a, library, added the headmaster. The representations had received favourable consideration. On the chairman’s suggestion, the matter was held over pending advica as to the result of the representations for a new room. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Tremaine, Hogg and Penketh was appointed to inspect tho new playing area and decide as.to when the children could be allowed to go on it.
