Winter Show Closes

SATURDAY’S RECORD ATTENDANCE As a fitting finale to the National Dairy Show, Saturday’s patronage established a record for last day attendances. There was au exceedingly large crowd attracted by the lino display and innovations in tho form of buck-jumping and band contest. The takings from all sources amounted to £393 18s 3d, as against £ll9 15s 8d for the Saturday of the Winter Show of 1933, making the highest single day’s takings of the Show and also the highest since the first days of the 1931 and 193tl June exhibitions. Comparative figures with last year arc as follow: — 1933 193-1 £ £ Gates and stands .... 905 17 9 1009 7 9 Women’s Institutes and art gallery .... 32 8 (5 13S .17 0 Stadium .... 50 13 0 37 12 0 Totals .... 98S 19 3 12-15 17 3 Saturday’s attendance was 11,744 (compared with 4145 for the last day of the 1933 Winter Show), while the total attendance over tho four days of the Show was 34,904 made up as follows: —First day 9982, second day 0030, third day 0548 and fourth ■ day 11,744. The Women’s Institutes’ display and art gallery attracted 121 S on tho first day, 1555 on the second, 1500 on the third and 1591 on Saturday—a total of 5870. Last year a total of 1297 only visited the art gallery. There was no Institute exhibit last year. ART SOCIETY'S ART UNION The public art union conducted by the Manawatu Socioty of Arts in conjunction with its exhibition at the National Dairy Show was drawn on Saturday evening, with tho following result:: First prize, valued at £0 0s: Mrs. Ronald Abraham, Park road, Palmerston North. Second prize, valued at £3 3s: Air. R. Waters e/o Massey College, Palmerston North, Third prize, valued at £2 2s: Mr. Percy Rhodes, Public Hospital, Palmerston North. Members of tho Art Society were particularly pleased at Mr. Rhodes’s success in tho art union. He has been a patient in the public hospital for many years, but is a working member of the society and takes a kccu interest in his hobby, one of his excellent coloured drawings having been on exhibition last week.
