Lotteries Popular in Australia
NOW IN ALL STATES BUT ONE. State lotteries have become an accepted form of investment in Australia as a means of assisting charitable objects, according to Mr Jolm Fuller, Of Sydney, who is on a visit to New Zealand. .Although 'tho Stevens Government was against lotteries when it was returned, it was now of the opinion that it would be unwise to abolish them, on the grounds that it would bo very difficult to raise the money for charities by other means such as straight-out taxation. A lottery also brought about an expectant happiness with many thousands of people, and, as a general rule, the average family was able to find the necessary ss. Tho trouble in raising money for charities in any other way was that so much of it went in expenses.
The result to-day was that every State in Australia now ran lotteries with the exception of Victoria, and it was inevitable that Victoria must follow suit, if it was only to prevent the flood of money to those States where lotteries were held. For the same reason he w*as inclindeto think that New Zealand would benefit immensely if the Government were to promote a monthly lottery, and so prevent the drain of Dominion money to the Commonwealth,
