Success of America’s Big Experiment Claimed
FOOD AND CLOTHING FOR THE UNEMPLOYED

What is described as a highly favourable analysis of wage rate increases and decreased hours of work per week, indicating success of the N.R.A., officially shows that average hourly earnings have increased from 42.7 cents an hour in the period from June 15 to July 15 to 50.5 cents from July 15 to August 15, while the average hours of work per week have dropped from 42.3 to 38.6 in tho 89 industries codified. Tho industries showed a striking contrast, the most outstanding being cotton textiles, with an increase from 23.2 to 36.1 cents and a decrease of from 49 to 36.5 hours.
President Roosevelt has authorised the Agricultural Adjustment Administration to buy upwards of 75,000,000 dollars’ worth of surplus food; and clothing supplies for distribution among the unemployed. His action is a direct reply to critics of the American. system, who have noted a paradox in a wealthy country with huge surpluses of basic commodities, while millions go hungry and ill-clad. The policy affords adequate assistance for 3,500,000 families on the relief rolls.
Mr Green, president of tho American Federation of Labour, has issued a statement denouncing critics of the N.R.A. labour clauses. He says the Act does not prevent a closed union shop, but gives workers their freedom to organise. Critics aro dismayed because the wage-earners are no longer under the necessity of paying tribute to a company.
