MONDAY—AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS

TUESDAY—RUMBERG V. PATTERSON

Quito an orgy of wrestling next week at the Opera House. The amateur championship heats and semi-finals will be staged wherein over 30 entrants will try conclusions in all weights except the heavyweights over 12 stone G pounds. In addition to those who are well known through their performances proceeding the big professional matches, there aro several whose form has been just as good but for whom it has been difficult to find a suitable opponent. On .Tuesday night the finals of the amateur championships shall be decided before the main bout comes on, so those w r ho would like to judge the form of the district champions, some 'of whom may represent the local association at the New Zealand championships against all comers from every part of the Dominion, are advised to go early as the first bout will commence sharp at 8 o'clock. The Rumberg-Patter-son match is creating’ great interest and the reports of the previous flutters between the big chaps, first in Auckland and only last Wednesday at Whangarei, show that there is very little between them as far as actual wrestling skill, strength and weight are concerned and if it was not for Patterson’s penchant for running up against the third man in the ring, he might have come out a winner. Patterson makes a fight, there is no gainsaying the fact, and in every city or town that he has appeared he has electrified the audience, even as he has done in our city, where we are accustomed to high powered excitement. The pair of them are about even as to temper and when they get a bit frayed at the edges, we may expect to see another pyrotechnic display. The box plans open at the Central Booking Office this morning.
