MANAWATU DEFEAT WAIRARAPA The representative soccer gamo played at North Street Park on Saturday ended in a win for Manawatu, who do- . feated Wairarapa 4-3. The ground was in anything but a satisfacory condition for so important a match, having been thoroughly churned up during the progress of the secondary schools’ tourney of the days before. The teams consisted of: — Manawatu (green): Crowe, Askam, Young, Thompson, Travers, Rainford, McSheffrey, Bridget, Hearsey, Babbitts. Wairarapa (blue): J. Jolly, WilburDavies, Robertson, John Bell, Haddow, Grant, Longworth, Gray, W. Jolly, Jambs Bell, James. The gamo opened without much merit being displayed by either side.) There were several early attempts toj net, tho most promising being by James Bell, but Crowe was equal to the occasion, It took the teams quite awhile to warm up, Wairarapa developing more aggressive tactics, that ended in James Bell scoring the first goal for tho visitors. The Greons replied with several hot attacks, but were unable ( to finish off tho movements. McSheffrey sent in a high shot that J. Jolly gathered in easily, while a stinging effort by Bridgens struck the post. Babbitts followed by sending the ball over the net, but about five minutes before tho spell ended he raised Manawatu ’s first points by heading in an accurate centre by Travers from the left wing. Just before half-time was called Wairarapa found another opening, Longworth gOaling from a scramble in front of tho posts at a moment when Crowe was out of position. Wairarapa 2, Manawatu 1. Tho Greens opened the second spell by displaying considerably more ingenuity and kept Jolly busy gathering in the leather. The mud in front of the net proved a big brake on the attacks, as well as hampering the defence. The Greens plodded on, how* ever, and were rewarded when Bridgens ran in with dazzling shot that Jolly had no chance of stopping. Manawatu kept. 1 up the pressure, Hcarsey lobbing in a shot that scraped tho paint of the top of the bar as it slid over. McSheffrey sent iu some wellplaced corner shots, but the Green vanguard were unable to complete the efforts. Then Wairarapa transferred play for a whilo into Manawatu territory, where a hot shot struck the post. Hard luck, James! Manawatu ran into tho lead when Bridgens accepted a pass from Travers. Tho goalie stopped the shot but dropped the leather which Bridgens, by good following up, was able to turn to account. Wairarapa delighted by a quick reply, James JukE ing the net within. a few seconds of the ,'kick-off. Tho Blues carried the leather right through, catching the Greens unawares. Manawatu were now showing something of their true form, and again took the lead when Thompson managed to net from a scramble in front of the goal following a perfect corner kick sent in by McSheffrey. For a fow minutes the Blue had things much their own way, • although never dangerous. When the Greens swept back Hcarsey again skimmed the topbar. The game ended ‘shortly after
