Autumn Blooms at Rongotea

FINE DISPLAY AT FLOWER SHOW

From Our Own Correspondent,

Depression has vanished if the wealth of blooms at the Rongotea autumn flower show yesterday counts for anything. The display was better by far than it has been for years. Mr. H. N. Caverhill, president of the society, introduced Mr. F. J. Nathan, president of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, who gave a brief outline of tbe objects and aims of the institute, which was formed about ten years ago for the furtherance of horticulture throughout the Dominion. Empowered by Act of Parliament t.o conduct examinations for persons who wish to qualify in branches of horticulture, the society has since then issued 250 certificates.

Mr. Nathan added: "A judging board has been set up. This has been done in consultation with all the horticultural societies within New Zealand, and expert judges have been nominated for the different classes New Zealand, the eventual object being to get a definite set of points for the various classes to be judged. A nomenclature board has also been set, up. The difficulty in the past has been that different names have been given to the same plant by various tradesmen. Our object has been to get a definite name for a definite plant. The institute, in conjunction with kindred associations and local horticultural societies, hold a national flower and vegetable show. The next National Show will bo held in Palmerston North, and it is hoped that full support will be forthcoming from this centre.’ In conclusion Mr. Nathan referred to the beautiful display presented. He considered the dahlias especially good. Reference was made to the novel and beautiful work dono by members of the Women’s Institute. Particularly was the work done by children under 16 years unusual and worthy of praise. Again expressing his thanks at the invitation to bo present and take pait, Mr. Nathan declared the show open. Mr. Nathan had a beautiful display of dahlias on exhibition and the blooms, which were extraordinarily largo and of excellent shape, showed that much care and attention had been paid them. Mr. A. J. Shatter, of Palmerston North, who acted as judge in the dahlia section, also had a beautiful display of blooms in every shade and hue.
