Women’s Institutes

BALLANCE Tho annual meeting of tho Ballance Womonls Institute was held on Wednesday aftornoou, Mrs Windlo presiding over a large attendance. An invitation was received to attend the first birthday of the Mangamutu Women’s Institute. Mrs McKenzie ghve an interesting report on the re cent group meeting held in Pahiatun. Tho annual report was read, and the balance sheet disclosed a credit of £4-8-9, which was considered most satisfactory. The eloction of officers resulted:—president, Mrs F. Horne; vicepresidents, Mesdames McKenzie (roelectcd), and Windlo; secretary, Mrs Harriman (re-elected); treasurer Miss T. Jones (re-elcted); committee, Mosrames Watt, Cooper, Coppell, Gibson, A. Sinclair, Brown, Misses A. and E. Croad. Two new members, Miss Margaret Gibson and Mrs A. Sinclair wero welcomed. Tho points prize for the year was won by Miss F. Jones with 17 points, Mrs F. Horne being runnerup. Mrs W. Cade, a visitor from Kaitai, gave an interesting demonstration on the making of toys from rubber tubing and supplied patterns for Isame. Thanks to the demonstrator were voiced by Mrs Windlo. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Airs Gibson, Misses E. Croad and F. Smith. In a neat little speech, Mrs Horne expressed regret that Mr 3 Windle was unable through ill-health to accapt nomination as president, but hoped she would soon bo restored to health and able to take that position next year. The meeting closed with the National Anthem, Mrs Tait being at tho piano. LONGBTON

The first annual meeting of the Longbum W.L was held in the hall on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Lemberg presiding over a good attendance. The meeting opened with tho “Odo to Friendship,” after which the secretary presented the annual report and ballance sheet, the latter showing the finances to be in a sound condition. Officers for tho ensuing year were elected as follow: President, Mrs Lemberg, (re-elected), treasurer, Mrs Hills, committee, Mesdames Bell, Boss, Hills. Kininmont, Lemberg, Rowland and Misses 81.B 1 . and V. Zuroher. The president and secretary were accorded a heaTty vote of thanks for their splendid work during tho past year, Miss Audrey Holland presenting each with a boautiful bouquet.

The winneres of the points prizes were Mrs T. Rowland and Miss M. Bell equal first, and Mrs Lemberg Mrs. Foss and Miss B. Zurchor equal second. As the birthday of the Institute falls due in April it was decided to celebrate with a social and dance. For next meeting each member is to bring a friond. Tho competition for tho afternoon will bo for tho best six plain scones and there will be a roll call for “Something I would like on this year’s programme.” There will also be a demonstration on making pictures from silver paper. Afternoon tea was served by tho hostesses, Mrs Best and Mrs Hearle, after which the singing of the National Anthem brought a busy but pleasant afternoon to a close.
