How They Ran

Easy for Riotous. •At the Marton New Year fixturo, Kimbo won tlio hurdles each day and Riotous was in second place. When the scratching- pen had finished at Ashhurst yesterday, there were only four horses left in the hurdles and the top-weights, Riotous and Kimbo had the raco to themselves, Riotous, nicely ridden by R. O. Miles, taking charge before the straight was reached and goiug on to win-, comfortably from Kimbo by over a length. W’hcn the barrier went up Riotous and Invictus were quickest to begin, but they had not gone far before Kimbo had charge to lead through the straight from the favourite, Makira and Invictus which wero following at two length intervals. Going into the back, Riotous ran up alongside Kimbo and they soon had a four lengths lead from Invictus. Running to the far turn, Riotous went to the front but Kimbo, under pressure, regained the lead. Riotous, however, Was going along easily and after outjumping the Clive-trained horse at the fence three furlongs from home, went, away to lead into the straight. Once over the last fence he wont on to win 'easily. Invictus was over two lengths awny from Kimbo. Speed Tells at the Finish.

Cuddle was the only one withdrawal from the Komako Hack for which Ida Mcrling, Golden Shadow and Tiger Gain wero sorted out as the likely ones. After a bis of trouble at the barrier, Ida Merling, Lady Court, Golden Shadow and Tiger Gain were first away and Speed was last to move. "When the field had settled down, Lady Court was the pacemaker and she showed the way across the top from Aeron, Ida Mcrling, Golden Shadow, Tiger Gain, Speed and Thomist. Turning into the straight she was still in charge followed by Acron and Ida Mcrling then Golden Shadow and Speed. There was a good finish. Ida Merling and Golden Shadow throw out challenges to the leader but she was holding them safe when Speed, on the outside, came with a brilliant burst over the last bit to head Lady Court which was threequarters of a length in front of Ida Merling. Golden Shadow was well up fourth-and Acron fifth. Brambletom Beats Fiji. The Hastings-trained Bramblctorn was only fifth in the betting order for the cup and he beat tho favourite, Fiji, which was at a very short price for the straight out win. When the barrier went up, Fiji got away well, but Habit, on tho fence, missed the

jump out and wont back to the rear of tho field. Ganpat led through the straight the first time from Capetown, Arajeau, Fiji, Brambletorn, Grand Jury and Habit. Going round the bend Brambletorn wont up fast and as they turned into the .back, web just in behind Ganpat, Capetown whs in third placo ahead of Habit, Arajoan, Fiji .and Grand Jury. They ran to the far turn in pairs, Ganpat and Brambletorn being in front followed by Habit and Capetown, Fiji and Arajoan. There was little alteration going across tho top and Brambletorn led the way into the straight attended by Ganpat, Habit, Fiji and Grand Jury. Nothing had a show with Brambletorn in the run to the judge and he wnn nicely by a length from Fiji which finished ■well to beat Gaupat by half a length. Habit was right up .fourth and Grand Jury was next to finish. A Close Finish. Grand Joy was withdrawn from tlie Novieo Stakes and in a field of a dozen runners, the public went for Dakar and Lackston. ' Tliero was a bit of a delay at tho start and when the tapes went up Park Acre was first to show out from Dakar, Lackston, Tannin and Lavina. Crossing the top the order was Lackston, Dakar, Lavina, Lovecourt, Park Acre, Tannin, Royal Jest and Colossian and tho leaders were unchanged into tho straight where Dakar and Lavina woro in' attendance on Lackston. In a good finish Lackston hung on well to win by a head from Lavina which made up ground over the Inst bit to cut Dakar out of second money, the favourite being a length away from Lavina at the post. Queanbeyan was fourth followed by Royal Jest and Lovecourt. There was an inquiry after tho race into alleged interference by Lackston with Dakar in tho straight but the stewards decided there was no evidence to show that it had any bearing on tho result and no action was taken. Morrath Beats Golden Shadow.'

Night Speaker was a fair favourite for tho Raumai Hack and Grand Lnhu was second choice. Grand Lahu broke clown during the running and was pulled up. No Humbug jumped back when tho tapes went up and Golden Shadow took up the running from Night Speaker and Morrath which were just, ju front of Grand Lahu. Going along the back Golden Shadow was in front closely attended by Morrath, with Night Speaker third. At the far turn Aforrath was with Golden Shadow and the pair were together crossing tho top aud at tho homo turn were" well clear of Night Speaker and No Humbug, which were together. The leaders had tho finish to themselves, Alorrath drawing away from Golden Shadow to win by a length. Night Speaker was four lengths further away. Convincing Win by False Scent.

The open sprint w y as contested by a good field and in tho best pool of the day there was most support for Kaihoro and Consent but All Hunibug and Leisure were very well backed. False Scent was last to movo when the barrier went up and Kaihoro led out from Consent, Sir Pombal, Leisure, All Humbug, Aston and Knollmere. Sir Pombal joined Kaihoro as they turned out of the back straight and the pair showed the wav across the top followed by Leisure, All Humbug, Consent and Aston, in that order. Tho field bunched running to the straight and at tho home turn Kaihoro and Sir Pombal were just in front of Aston, Leisure and All Humbug and False Scent, on the rails, was close up. As they swung into line for tho run to the judge, False Scent got a lucky run on the fence and had hit tho front a furlong from home. After that there was only cne in it, False Scent going onto win easily by three lengths from Sir Pombal, which beat Aston by half a lengtn. Leisure was half a length further away fourth and Kaihoro was fifth.

A Blanket Finish,

The Siberia Hack Handicap was a five horse race but it was remarkable for a splendid finish in which the first four horses flashed past the judge almost in line. Arena was a good favourite but could do no better than fourth. The early order was King Peg and Arena from Lady Court, Speed and Toxmiss. As they crossed tho top King Peg and Arena were together in front just ahead of Lady Court, on the rails, and Speed. This was tho order into the straight and once in lino Lady Court and Speed closed on the others and in a most exciting finish, MqDowell, with something in reserve for tho last effort, pushed Lady Court to the front just at the post. Speed was a head away second, followed by King Peg and Arena at head intervals.

COULD NOT RIDE

Comparatively few first-class jockeys have been successes as horse trainers. On the other hand, some men who have done particularly well as trainers had very little to do with horses in their youth. One of England’s prominent trainers of jumping horses is T. Coulthwaitc, who is affectionately known in the Midlands as “Honest Tom.’’ Referring to Coulthwaito, a London writer recently remarked: “ ‘Honest Tom,’ it is said, has only been on a horse once in his life, and that horse was a pit pony. Disliking tho sensation intensely, he got off, saying: ‘Take •un back to t’ pits’—and has since trained hundreds of winners. He specialises in Liverpool hurdlers.’’ RACING FIXTURES.
