T&a Aslifiurgt-Polungina Racing Club’s annual fixture is recognised a* one of the most enjoyable on the racing calendar and yesterday’s meeting was no exception to the rule. The day was delightfully fine and the course was in first rate order after the rain. The attendance waa up to expectations and patrons witnessed some exciting races with a number of very close finishes. The win and place system of betting was tried out for the first time in the history of the district and it proved a popular innovation with the racing public.

The principal events on the programme, the Ashhurst Cup and Pohangina Handicaps, were won by the Hawke’s Bay horses, Brambletorn and False Scent, the former beating a hot favourite -in Fiji, and the latter, feir Fombal and Aston. Totalisatcr Investments. The totalisator investments last year amounted to £7095 and this straight-out-win machine handled i. 3589 and the place machine £3IOB, making a total of £6787 for the day or only £SOS below the investments for last Inquiry Into Running of Novice Stakes. After tho running of the Novice Stakes, the judicial committee inquired into alleged interference by H. Young, the rider of the winner, Lackston, with Dakar, ridden by L. G. Morris, but decided that though Young should bo cautioned for the careless use of his whip there was nothing in the evidence to suggest that such carelessness had affected the result in any way.
