CORONER COMMENTS ON NTTMBL OF ROAD ACCIDENTS

The need for a vigorous prosecution of tho safety first campaign was urged by Air. A. J. Graham (Coroner) when presiding at an inquest in Palmerston North yesterday. Alotor accidents, he said, wero becoming all too numerous. Ho had no fewer than four inquests pending, all resulting from motor accidents. It was unfortunate that a large number of deaths were occurring throughout the Dominion as a result of motor accidents, and some grave steps would have to be taken to combat a situation which was causing a great, deal of anxiety. Ail regulations would have to be strictly enforced in order to minimise danger to life and limb. Afotorists generally seemed to have developed a lust for speed, and he thought automobile associations could do a great deal of educational work by encouraging the safety first, policy —safety for themselves and safety for other users of the roads.

There were occasions when pedestrians contributed to accidents and fatalities, and it became essential that all who used the roads should bear iu mind their responsibility to make themselves familiar with the rules of the road and to use the road with proper regard for the safety of others. It was to be hoped, added Mr. Graham, that the authorities would produce some method of preventing this blot on the social life of New Zealand. The problem would hare to be solved.
